Search giant Google has been testing the blocking of news for some users in Canada ahead of the date for online news legislation to come into force.

Trust in news sources has fallen by 2% globally, but in Australia the fall is much steeper, at 6%, according to the annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report.

Fifty-eight percent of those who consume news in Australia do so on their smartphones, the first time this percentage has overtaken the consumption on computers and tablets, according to the seventh annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2018.

Around half of the people in 26 countries surveyed by Reuters, including Australia, say they use social media as a source of news each week, with one in 10 saying it was their main source.

Australian print newspapers are continuing their long decline in circulation, but online readership is up.

Fairfax Media, the only serious news print competitor to News Limited, has all but thrown in the towel to the online juggernaut, announcing a massive restructuring. In addition to cutting nearly 2000 jobs - many of them journalists - the two flagship broadsheet publications SMH and The Age will be reduced to tabloids and have digital paywalls introduced.
